Australian Apprenticeships

Tasmania makes a distinction between apprenticeships and trainees. However, in relation to the Australian Apprenticeships scheme, all trainees and apprentices are referred to as ‘Australian Apprentices’.

In Tasmania, an apprenticeship is generally up to 4 years, and most traineeships are 12-24 months and will be delivered be a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

More information on apprenticeships and traineeships is available from Australian Apprenticeship Centres, by calling Skills Tasmania on 1800 655 846. Thinking of hiring a new trainee? Click here for an employers guide to apprenticeships and traineeships.

New trainees under "User Choice" funding:

Funding to cover the training fees may be available for new trainees through “User Choice” state funding arrangements. New trainees may also be eligible for Commonwealth incentives of between $3,000 and $4,000 per learner.

Existing worker traineeships and funding:

An existing worker is an employee who has a 3 month or more full-time equivalent employment relationship with their employer.

Existing worker trainees are not eligible for user choice funds, but may be eligible for the Commonwealth incentives of between $3,000 and $4,000 per learner. These incentives usually cover the RTOs training fees with funds left to go onto your bottom line! The eligibility of existing workers to attract incentives can depend on the prior qualifications they hold and whether the apprentice/trainee meets the eligibility requirements of the program.

Click here for further information on the Australian Apprenticeship Incentives program.

Travel and accomodation allowance:

Travel and accommodation allowances are payable to apprentices and trainees who are required to travel either within Tasmania or interstate to attend structured training.

Allowances assist apprentices and trainees to attend training at their chosen training organisation. This assistance contributes to the cost of accommodation, meals and travel for apprentices and trainees travelling to another regional area of the state or in some cases, interstate. These allowances should not be confused with the Commonwealth allowance paid to apprentices and trainees living away from home to work outside their regional area.
